Charity quilting

Last month I joined a Charity group that makes quilts for kids. The leader of the group kept handing me things like some of these 6 inch squares. I cut up a few more from fabric I had and fabric that my neighbor gave me. One kids quilt coming up.

We were given a butterfly pattern to make applique blocks that will be incorporated into scrap quilts. I made these 3 with left over white layer cake squares and some scraps.

This one isn't very pretty but it is colorful.

This was a panel that they gave me. I added some borders.

I quilted it. I made binding.

Here's another one that I used my fabrics on. It's ocean themed.

I call it "Fish Farts" lots of bubbles. I quilted it.

This one is now quilted and the back of it is Noah's ark fabric.

This someone else pieced with Christmas fabric strips. I got the backing from my neighbor. I quilted and bound this one.

Flamingo collage and mermaid baby quilt

My sisters visited for a week. My oldest sister is now quilting a lot. She arrived with this Flamingo quilt. She only had the flamingo finished. I helped her with the leaves and suggested how to do the water.  I quilted it with an edge to edge design then free handing the waves and grass leaves.

She made the humming bird out of snips of fabric. She cut out all of these flowers and layered them for the feathers.

She made this Mermaid baby quilt also. It was her own design. She had this fabric for a few years. She gave it to me and I gave it back to her. She finally used it.

We got the flannel backing from Joanne's.

Baby Sewing

Here are a bunch of odds and ends flannel fabric. Some are scraps and others are a yard or more.

Here is a bin that I am determined to use up this month for baby projects. I won't be using the Christmas fabric but as much of the juvenile fabric as I can.

Here's a bunch of it draped on my longarm. I'm trying to coordinate the prints.

Here's one of the boy blankets that I made using the self mitered binding method found on Youtube. 

Here's a girl blanket. They are all different sizes depending on the amount of fabric I have.

These are some boy bibs. I still have to top stitch and add velcro to the stack on the right. I also made some burp cloths and wash cloths with the smallest pieces.

More boy bibs. I used up most of the boy fabric first. I only just got started on the girl fabrics.

This is a stack of different sized blankets and a couple of changing pads.

Here's a stack of girl fabric waiting to become something.  Some of these are leftovers from quilt backs that need to be transformed into something useful. 

I'm trying to get this used up by the end of March. Just a little goal for myself.

Baby Girl quilt

Here's a baby quilt that I started hand quilting 10 years ago. It was so difficult to pull the needle through that I gave up after 8 blocks. I buried it somewhere - never to be heard from again.  

Well guess what? I actually put it on my UFO list to finish this year.

 (If I were Nancy where would I put that unfinished baby quilt?)

Well I sat and thought is it in the bottom of my leftover batting drawer. A vague inkling... 

Sure enough I unearthed it. I picked all of that hand stitching out last night and quilted it on the long arm today.

Binding on today too. I usually make the binding while the long arm is stitching.

This is my 10th finish for February!! Still have 2 more days to go.

Lucy's Crab shack fabric line. I used one jelly roll plus extra for border and scrappy binding.

I straight stitched a quarter inch on each side of the seam.  FMQ kite tails in border. 

Stormy Crossing

FINISH IT UP FRIDAY with CRAZY MOM QUILTS.I started with a layer cake from Connecting Threads. It was only 17 pieces. I used 16 in the blocks and the 17th was the navy rain in the sashing squares. I saw this pattern somewhere on the web and decided it would be fast and it was. Just insert a strip diagonally and sew it back together cut it in the opposite diagonal and insert your other sashing strip and sew it back together. I made the strips longer than the diagonal length then trimmed them all down at the end to get a pointed square.

 So today I finished the FMQ with the clouds and some echoing.

Binding sewn on with blanket stitch from the front using Pat Sloan's method. It's the first time I tried this and it was fast going. It's not perfect but good enough.

 The blocks laid out before sewin the rows. My design wall is an old flannel sheet. Next time I throw it in the washer I will turn it over so the snowflakes are face down.

 Here it is quilted and auditioning binding. I did a single fold binding as I didn't have enough fabric for doubling.

A baby quilt finished

Here it is all quilted and binded in the morning light showing all the detail. Love it. Now need to label it and wash it.

So here is the flimsy with all borders added.

I just finished the borders on this baby quilt and pin basted it. Ready for hand quilting. It only finished at 44 inches square. The star block was paper pieced. The pattern was free from the Summer Sampler quilt along. You can google it or find it on flickr.

Sarah's Baby Quilt

This is a close up of the utility stitching I did by hand. Love it.

Here's the quilt I made for my niece Sarah, I utility quilted it with pearle cotton in yellow and gray. Put a C in the middle circle for her last name. She didn't know what she was having but ended up having a boy so the quilt worked out great. I love how it turned out.

Okay so for Friday Night Sew IN I had to finish the upper right star and sew all the blocks together. Did all that and now have to decide on boarders. I already bought a baby size batting and can't make it any wider than 45 inches. I'm thinking a thin white boarder and then finish it off with teal. I originally wanted to make a scrappy boarder then a teal but I think it's going to be too big. The blocks are 11.5 finished. I will have to think about it.

I've been working on this new baby quilt for about a week and a half. Paper piecing the stars. I am using leftover scraps from previous baby quilt but added solid teal color instead of gray this time.

 Just made this baby quilt at quilt retreat this weekend in Boulder City.  Now someone needs to have a boy so I can send it to them.  I have a girl quilt for backup purposes posted earlier on this blog.
